At St Marys the design and technology curriculum develop pupils’ knowledge and skills across the areas of cooking and nutrition, mechanical systems, textiles, electrical systems, structures, and the digital world.
In year 1 they learn about fruit and vegetables in their food topic make their own smoothie. They are introduced to structures by building a windmill. Mechanisms are explored through making a moving story book and learning all about axles and wheels. They develop their textiles skills by designing and making their own hand puppet.
In year 2 the children revisit mechanisms by designing and making their own Ferris wheel and a moving monster. To understand food and a balanced diet the children plan and make a healthy wrap. They develop their knowledge of structures by building a baby bear’s chair and test its stability. In textiles they make a Roman pouch which builds on their sewing skills from year one.
