At St Mary’s we aim to educate the children about the importance of adopting a healthy lifestyle.
The children have a fruit snack everyday and have access to drinking water throughout the day. The option of milk is also available (cost applicable for some children). The school serves meals provided by Hertfordshire Catering Limited, who offer a well balanced and nutritious menu.
The class teachers often use ‘Brain Gym’ techniques to keep children’s brains and bodies alert and active and children participate in the ‘Daily Mile’ .
Through the curriculum, children are taught the importance of eating healthily and getting exercise.
The children have 15 minutes morning play and 1 hour at lunchtime. At lunchtime a variety of sport/ play equipment is available for the children to use.

PE takes place outside as often as possible; depending on weather and the nature of the PE session.
We have a sports coach who supports the teachers in PE session across the school once a week. This is funded through Sports Premium.
The school has a yearly Sports day where the whole school take part in a range of sports activities as colour teams as well as take part in running races on the school track.
The PE Subject Leader has created a ‘Healthy Selfie’ board in school to encourage children to be pictured doing a healthy activity and share this with the school. Certificates are handed out in Achievement Assembly each week.
The Year 2 children take in a sports event, each year, including events held at the Letchworth Tennis Club and The Knights Templar School. Some children are selected to join the junior school, to represent Year 2, in the annual District Sports competition.
